Rita Agarwal MD is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, at Stanford, Past President and a founding member of the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine, Past Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and former member of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Board of Directors. She is a member of the ABA Pediatric Anesthesiology Committee and an ABA Basic Exam Question Editor, AAP Committee on Substance Use Prevention, the AAP Clinical Guideline Taskforce on Opioid Prescription, and the American Medical Association Taskforce on Substance Use Prevention and Pain Medicine. Perioperative Considerations in Pediatric Patients with Substance Use Disorder

Dr. Alrayashi is an associate in perioperative anesthesia and pain medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. He completed his medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago and then residency at NYU. He later went on to complete his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Boston Children’s, and completed additional training in regional anesthesiology at the same institution. He has a special interest in the use of ultrasound in the perioperative care of pediatric and young adult patients. This includes the use of ultrasound for the therapeutic treatment of acute pain as well as the diagnosis for acute pathologies. He has published on clinical outcomes in various regional anesthesia outcomes and reported on the use of ultrasound in clinical care. He has lectured at various national and international conferences and taught workshops in regional anesthesia and point of care ultrasonography. He founded the home analgesia program at Boston Children’s Hospital, the only of its kind in the northeastern United States. At present he is developing a comprehensive POCUS training program for clinicians at his institution and is the director of Regional Anesthesiology at Boston Children's Hospital of the Harvard Medical School.

SESSION III: What's Budding in the Field of Pediatric Pain - Fresh Ideas Worth Sharing
Dr Lisa Einhorn is a pediatric anesthesiologist and physician-scientist at Duke University where she completed her residency and fellowship. She is also a faculty member on the Duke Inpatient Pain Service and practices pain management in hospitalized adult and pediatric patients with both acute and chronic pain. Dr. Einhorn is the director of the Pediatric Pain and Analgesic Trials Laboratory and the clinical director of pediatric pain at Duke. Her research is in focused on developing innovative approaches to mitigate perioperative pain in children to improve functional outcomes after surgery. She has received funding from the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the Society of Thoracic Surgery, and NICHD/NIH to conduct observational and interventional clinical trials.

Dr Teddy Fabila is a Resident Physician in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Paediatric Anaesthesia Department and Visiting Consultant at the Philippine Children’s Medical Centre. He took his basic anaesthesia training in Manila, then joined KKH in Singapore for a paediatric anaesthesia fellowship in 2011, and since then, has worked as a staff in the department.
Dr Fabila has more than twelve years of experience geared towards specialising in paediatric anaesthesia, pain treatment and prevention, hospital quality and safety, and medical informatics.
Dr Teddy serves as Secretary of the ASPA-Paediatric Pain Special Interest Group. In KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, he holds various leading positions, such as Paediatric Pain Management Committee, Management of Information for Hospital Quality and Patient Safety, and Medical Informatics for the Division of Surgery.
Dr. Finley is a pediatric anesthesiologist who has worked for over 30 years in pain research and management. He is Professor of Anesthesia, Pain Management, & Perioperative Medicine at Dalhousie University, and is cross-appointed as Professor of Psychology & Neuroscience. He also holds the inaugural Dr. Stewart Wenning Chair in Pediatric Pain Management at IWK Health in Halifax and is Director of the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research. He has published more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals (http://tinyurl.com/gaf-cits) and has lectured widely, with 330 invited presentations on six continents.
He started the PEDIATRIC-PAIN e-mail discussion list in 1993, bringing together pain researchers and clinicians from over 40 countries. His own research and educational projects have taken him to Jordan, Thailand, China, Brazil, and elsewhere. His main interest is pain service development and advocacy for improved pain care for children around the world. To facilitate that, he is co-founder and Board member of the ChildKind International Initiative (http://childkindinternational.org). He was also a member of the Canadian Health Standards Organization Pediatric Pain Management Working Group that developed the first ever national hospital standard for children’s pain care in 2023.
His current research includes broad collaborations with Canadian colleagues at Dalhousie University and the Universities of Ottawa, Calgary, and Manitoba. He has been a co-I of the CIHR SPOR Chronic Pain Network and is currently part of the European IN-ChildPain Network.
In 2016, he was elected to the Executive of the International Association for the Study of Pain as Treasurer, and has recently served as Councilor, an exciting opportunity to be part of the promotion of pain science and pain care around the world. In that role he serves as co-Chair of the Global Advocacy Working Group.
Dr. Furlan is a physician specialized in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a special interest in the rehabilitation of people with chronic pain. She is Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Senior Scientist at the KITE Institute at Toronto Rehab, and chair of ECHO Ontario Chornic Pain and Opioid Stewardship. She has a YouTube channel for people with chronic pain with more than 660,000 subscribers, and she is author to the book 8 STEPS TO CONQUER CHRONIC PAIN.

Dr. Cheryl Hartzell is a pediatric anesthesiologist and chronic and interventional pain physician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Associate Professor at University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. She completed both pediatric anesthesia and pediatric pain medicine fellowships at Cincinnati Children’s. Her clinical passion includes forming partnerships with surgical specialties to identify patients who have chronic pain and functional disability and may be surgical candidates, engaging them early in the evaluation process with the multidisciplinary pain approach to optimize perioperative and functional outcomes. She has led the collaboration to form the Thoracic Outlet Multidisciplinary Clinic at Cincinnati Children's, developing novel pain interventional procedures in the pediatric population to prevent surgical need and improve functional outcomes. She works with the CCHMC Pancreas Care Center as one of the pain physicians evaluating patients with recurrent and chronic pancreatitis. She is also one of the lead investigators with the Pancreas Care Center examining pain and quality of life outcomes following Total Pancreatectomy and Islet Auto-transplantation. Her other research interests include utilizing mindfulness techniques in the perioperative population to improve post-operative functional outcomes, in which she was awarded the SPA Young Investigator Award. Being from Wisconsin, she is a die-hard Packers fan (even though she married a Chicago Bears fan), and an avid ultra-endurance cyclist.

Dr. Jamie Kitzman is a pediatric anesthesiologist at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine. She is also a board-certified Medical Acupuncture and a member of the Inpatient Pain Services at Egleston. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine. She is an active member of their Editorial Board, Education Committee, and Advocacy Committee. Her advocacy efforts focus on increasing awareness of non-pharmacologic methods of pain management and the prevention of adolescent opioid misuse. Her research interest includes the use of non-pharmacologic tools in the perioperative period, in chronic pain management, and in the prevention/treatment of opioid use disorders. When she is not busy running around in the OR, Preop Clinic, or Acupuncture clinic, she a proud mother, chasing around her young twins.

Dr. Pillai Riddell is the Tier 1 York Research Chair in Pain and Mental Health and Director of the Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt Laboratory (OUCH Lab ; www.yorku.ca/ouchlab) in the Department of Psychology of York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is also a registered clinical psychologist, licensed to work with children and adults in clinical and health psychology. As both a basic-behavioural scientist and a clinician-scientist, Dr. Pillai Riddell leads a multi-national research program that studies parents and young children during stressful painful procedures, with her research now focused in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. Her research is funded by all three national Canadian research councils (Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council). She has also been involved extensively in supporting EDI initiatives in research contexts at both the institutional and federal levels and is the Nominated Principal Investigator for DIVERT Mental Health. This is a multi-million dollar CIHR-funded national training program setting out to disrupt the Canadian mental health system by innovating curriculum for mental health trainees that focuses on more diverse knowledges and leverages technology to make mental health services more accessible (divertmentalhealth.ca). Pillai Riddell is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists. She was also awarded the 2020 Canadian Pain Society’s Outstanding Mentorship Award and the 2019 American Pain Society’s Jeffrey Lawson Award for Advocacy in Children’s Pain.

Dr Sarah Wallwork is a University of South Australia Early Career Research Fellow, situated in IIMPACT in Health at the University of South Australia. Her research targets early childhood as a critical period to buffer against the development of future pain problems. Her work investigates validation of children’s pain, how pain and injury are socialised to children, and the impact of children’s pain experiences on the development of their foundational beliefs and behaviours surrounding pain. Importantly, her research investigates how these early life experiences can lay the trajectory for future pain experiences.
